“I am reaping the fruits of my persistence”
Vladimir Slavskij is something like the éminence grise in Russian or rather Eastern European, Nordic winter sports. He saw states come and go; he was alive when the city of Chaykovsky, which now has a population of 120,000 only existed on the drawing board of Soviet architects. Today, he is the Vice President for ski jumping and Nordic combined at the Russian Ski Federation.
But above all, Slavskij is one thing nowadays: happy. “I am reaping the fruits of my persistence” and the clear, notable, rough Russian voice shows another characteristic of his country: melancholia and pride.
While the international ski jumping circuit in Central Europe and Scandinavia is rushing from one station to the next, with some Russian jumpers in field, revolutionary things happen in Chaykovsky. “You have to imagine this”, says Slavskij. “There is a country such as Russia - large, prominent, rich - and it isn’t even able to provide domestic training facilities to its very own athletes”.
Although, as the long-serving expert continues, this all used to be available. Chaykovsky used to be the home of a winter sports institute. Specialists used to work and research here and all skiers - whether alpine or Nordic - had a reliable place to go. Both athletes and coaches in the former USSR had a home in Chaykovsky.
He looks back wistfully: “This was 30 years ago and not much has happened since then. There was no new equipment because the sport itself became more and more redundant. And after the breakup of the USSR, almost everything that was old had been destroyed“.
But everything is different now and Slavskij’s voice switches from sad to euphoric. “The awarding of the Olympic Winter Games to Sochi triggered a big impulse for the revival of winter sports in the region”, he says. “The region Perm Krai appealed to the Sports Minister who approved of the project. The financing was secured. The name which was given to the Nordic winter sports initiative (which also includes other locations) is denoting: success”. Success in Sochi.
Planning startet in 2009, foreign specialists such as the company Rehau or the SKI-LINE of Peter Riedel GmbH have been secured for the construction of the ski jumps. “And now, in February, 2012, we are able to say: the first jumps have been a success, even in front of Vladimir Putin’s eyes!” Slavskij rejoices. “On March 20, the Russian championships will be hosted here. This will be another milestone for the facilities which have been given the name ‘Snowflake’. At last the Russian ski jumpers have domestic training facilities and Chaykovsky is the pioneer!”
For Sochi, Slavskij is building his hopes on the ski jumping women, eight men and the combination athlete Ivan Panin - “some tangible rewards would be nice to see”, he says. But besides the desirable athletic success, he sees a rosy future for Chaykovsky. “There is not only the ski jumps but also a biathlon area, freestyle facilities and a lot more. All of this can be used efficiently and profitably. Chaykovsky shall become a city for sports and tourism because the scenery is picturesque and well worth seeing. The region was given a beautiful present - all it has to do now is make something out of it“.
Asked whether Nordic ski championships will take place in Chaykovsky some time in future, 2021 or 2023, Slavskij does not know an answer. “Let’s proceed step by step - summer Grand Prix in autumn, FIS Ski Jumping Continental Cup next winter, further international championships if the FIS awards us the contract. And with regards to a world championship: of course it would be a dream come true for the region, the city and me. But many Russian cities will scuffle for this world championship...”
Hence, what remains isn’t the history which must yet be achieved but the history which has already been created. “We are re-writing the history of Russian ski jumping. Within the next five to ten years, we will catch up at an international level. This is what we failed to do in the past. My personal dream is coming true”.
Slavskij smiles and is pleased. As he already said: „I am reaping the fruits of my persistence”.

Wladimir Slavskij est une personne représentant la grande éminence grise du sport d’hiver russe, ou plutôt : du sport d’hiver de l’Europe de l’Est et nordique. Il a vu aller et venir les États, il vivait déjà lorsque la ville de Tchaïkovski, comptant aujourd’hui 120.000 habitants, n’existait que sur les brouillons des architectes soviétiques, et aujourd’hui, il est le vice-président pour le saut à ski et le combiné nordique au sein de la fédération de ski russe.
Aujourd’hui cependant, avant toutes choses, on peut caractériser la vie de M. Slavskij par l’adjectif suivant : heureuse. « Je recueillis les lauriers suite à ma ténacité » dit-il dans sa voix russe, étant en même temps claire, dure et bien articulée, et exprimant une autre qualité de son pays : la mélancolie et la fierté.
Tandis que le cirque de saut à ski international en Europe centrale et en Scandinavie soit toujours pressé d’aller d’une station à l’autre, parmi eux quelques sauteurs russes, une réelle révolution est en train de se passer à Tchaïkovski. « Vous devez imaginer cela » dit M. Slavskij. « Là, il y un État comme la Russie, étant grand, éminent et riche – et cet État-là n’est pas capable de fournir les possibilités d’entraînement pour ses propres sportifs dans leur patrie »
Cependant, continue l’expert blanchi sous le harnais, il y a déjà eu tout cela. À Tchaïkovski était domicilié un institut de sport d’hiver, offrant les possibilités de travail et de recherche pour les experts, et servant en tant que centre d’écoute fiable pour tous les sportifs de ski – soit alpins ou nordiques. À Tchaïkovski, les sportifs et les entraîneurs de l’ancien URSS étaient à la maison.
Le regard en arrière passe par la mélancolie : « On parle d’une période d’il y a 30 ans, et il n’y a pas grandes choses qui ont évolué jusqu’à ce jour-là. Il n’y avait plus d’équipements modernes puisque les sports eux-mêmes perdaient de plus en plus d’importance. Et suite au déclin de l’URSS, on a détruit presque toutes les anciennes institutions »
Maintenant, tout a changé, et la voix de M. Slavskijs passe de la tristesse à un état euphorique. « Quand on a décidé que les Jeux olympiques d’hiver se dérouleront à Sotchi, cela a été une impulsion importante pour la renaissance des sports d’hiver dans la région » raconte-il. « La région de Perm s’est adressée au ministre des sports, et celui-ci a accepté le projet de manière que le financement ait été assuré. On a donné un nom significatif à l’initiative des sports d’hiver nordiques (regroupant également d’autres sites) : succès » Succès à Sotchi.
Depuis 2009, on a initié le planning et fidélisé les experts étrangers comme la société Rehau ou la SKI-LINE de la Peter Riedel GmbH pour la construction des tremplins. « Et maintenant, en février 2012, nous sommes capables de dire : Les premiers sauts, aussi au vue de Wladimir Putin, sont réussis ! » Slavskij triomphe. « Le 20 mars auront lieu ici les championnats russes, cela sera un autre jalon pour les installations portant le nom ‹ flocon de neige ›. Enfin, finalement, les sauteurs russes ont des possibilités d’entraînement dans leur patrie, et Tchaïkovski est l’avant-coureur ! »
À Sotchi, M. Slavskij espère en les femmes sautant au ski, en huit hommes et au coureur de combiné nordique Ivan Panin – « on attend des résultats dénombrables » dit-il. Mais, en plus du succès sportif désirable, il voit le futur de Tchaïkovski en rose. « À part des tremplins, il y a un complexe de biathlon, des installations de ski acrobatique et beaucoup d’autres. Ceux-ci peuvent être exploités de manière efficace et rentable. Tchaïkovski et censée de devenir une ville des sports et du tourisme, car le paysage et pittoresque et absolument à voir. On a fait un beau cadeau à la région – désormais, c’est à elle d’en profiter »
M. Slavskij ne sait toujours pas si Tchaïkovski va accueillir les championnats de ski nordiques, en 2021 ou en 2023. « Prenons un pas après l’autre – le Grand Prix d’Été en automne, la coupe continentale de saut à ski en hiver prochain, et d’autres concours internationaux si le FIS décide de nous les attribuer. Et concernant un championnat de monde : certainement, cela serait un rêve de la région, de la ville, de moi. Mais beaucoup de villes russes lutteront pour ce championnat … »
Ce qui reste, ce ne sont pas les objectifs historiques à y arriver, mais ce sont les objectifs historiques auxquels on est déjà arrivé. « Nous sommes en train de récrire l’histoire du saut à ski en Russie. Dans les cinq à dix ans à venir, nous allons rattraper beaucoup au niveau international, tout ce qu’on a négligé dans le passé. Mon rêve personnel est en train de se réaliser.

Владимир Славский является кем-то вроде влиятельного серого кардинала в российском, или лучше, восточноевропейском, скандинавском зимнем виде спорта. Он повидал многое на своем веку: как сменились государства, как Чайковский, город, который насчитывает сегодня 120.000 жителей, был только на чертежах советских архитекторов. А сегодня Славский является вице-президентом федерации по прыжкам на лыжах с трамплина и лыжному двоеборью России.
Но прежде всего сегодня он – счастливый человек: «Я пожинаю плоды своего упрямства», и в его ясном, четком и суровом русском голосе слышится то, что характеризует его страну: тоска и гордость.
В то время как в Центральной Европе и Скандинавии «бродячий цирк» международных прыжков на лыжах с трамплина кочует с одного привала к другому вместе с немногими российскими спортсменами, в Чайковском происходят революционные события. «Вы только представьте себе, - говорит Славский. – Такая огромная, выдающаяся и богатая страна как Россия не может предоставить своим спортсменам возможности тренироваться на Родине».
При этом, как говорит эксперт со стажем, всё это уже было. В Чайковском был институт по зимним видам спорта, здесь работали специалисты, и все спортсмены – горнолыжники и двоеборцы – могли пользоваться надежной точкой для разгона. Спортсмены и тренеры бывшего СССР были в Чайковском как у себя дома.
Взгляд назад вызывает тоску: «Это было 30 лет назад, и с тех пор немногое изменилось. Современного оснащения больше не было, так как самим видам спорта придавалось все меньше и меньше значения. А после распада СССР почти все старое было разрушено».
Но теперь все иначе! И печаль в голосе Славского сменяется на эйфорию. «Право проведения Зимних Олимпийских Игр в Сочи внесло новый толчок для возрождения зимних видов спорта в регионе, - рассказывает он. – Пермский край обратился в министерство спорта, и проект был согласован, так что финансирование было обеспечено. Примечателен и лозунг, под которым проходит проект по зимнему виду спорта (в котором задействованы и другие города): успех!» Успех в Сочи.
С 2009 года было запланировано привлечь иностранных специалистов, таких как предприятие Rehau или SKI-LINE компании Peter Riedel GmbH, для строительства трамплинов. «И вот в феврале 2012 года мы можем спокойно сказать: первые прыжки удались, даже на глазах у Владимира Путина! – торжествует Славский. – 20-го марта здесь пройдут российские первенства, что станет следующим событием для комплекса трамплинов, получившего имя «Снежинка». Наконец-то, наконец-то у российских спортсменов появится возможность тренироваться на Родине, и Чайковский стал первопроходцем!»
В Сочи Славский возлагает надежды на летающих лыжниц, 8 прыгунов на лыжах с трамплина и двоеборца, Ивана Панина – «Надеемся, что кто-то принесет команде России дополнительные медали». Наряду с желаемым спортивным успехом Славский видит и будущее Чайковского в розовом свете. «У нас теперь не только трамплины, но и биатлонный комплекс, трассы для фристайла и многое другое. Все это можно эффективно и выгодно использовать. Чайковский должен стать городом спорта и туристов, поскольку здешний живописный ландшафт заслуживает внимания. Краю был сделан прекрасный подарок – теперь его очередь что-то из этого сделать».
Будут ли в Чайковском когда-нибудь, скажем, в 2021 или 2023 году, проходить чемпионаты мира по скандинавскому лыжному спорту, на этот вопрос Славский пока ответить не может. «Давайте не будем опережать события – летний Гран-При осенью, континентальный кубок по прыжкам с трамплина на лыжах следующей зимой, другие международные соревнования, если так распорядится федерация FIS. А что касается чемпионата мира: конечно, сбылась бы мечта края, города и, наконец, моя мечта. Но за этот чемпионат будут бороться многие российские города…“
В конце концов, с точки зрения истории нельзя повторять то, что уже было, а следует учиться на опыте других. «Мы заново пишем историю прыжков на лыжах с трамплина в России. Последующие 5 - 10 лет нам придется многое нагнать до международного уровня – то, что было запущено в прошлом. Моя личная мечта претворяется в жизнь».
Славский смеется и доволен. Как он уже говорил: «Я пожинаю плоды своего упрямства».
