Ski flying on the Kulm!

Definitely one of the highlights of the year - the ski flying spectacle on the Kulm! Anyone who has ever been there knows what I'm talking about. You don't often see such long-distance jumps and that the Nordic "kings of the skies" have such a long airtime. We have been providing the track service during the ski flying competitions on the Kulm since 2015, when we built the ice track there.

Time to give you some key information about the largest skijumping hill in Austria!

The inrun track on the Kulm is 131 meters long and is roughly comparable to the inrun length of the hill in Bischofshofen. However, the Kulm differs in that it has a much steeper inrun angle. The ice block is 7 centimeters thick. Two channels are milled in it, in which the jumping skis are guided. The entire ice track is permanently cooled by an integrated cooling system so that the temperature remains stable and the ice block does not melt. Using a track milling machine that is moved up and down by a winch, several longitudinal grooves are milled into both channels. On the one hand, they are necessary so that any rainwater can drain away or - in the event of snowfall - the snow collects in them. On the other hand, the sliding properties are optimized.

We are on site the entire weekend with two men and are also supported by helpers from the organizing committee. With an approach that is almost 35 degrees steep, it goes without saying that all work is only carried out with ropes. The FIS approval of the track took place yesterday Wednesday and the final milling of the track is planned for this morning. Then nothing stands in the way of a cool ski flying weekend!
